Help support people with cancer

Cancer continues to have an impact on many in our community.

In 2014, Tammy Foster from Ascot Vale founded the Tammy Foster Foundation (TFF) after her personal experience with cancer. Tammy was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 42 in February 2011. In the previous month her brother Jason aged 41 had been diagnosed with lung cancer. Jason unfortunately lost his battle with lung cancer in August 2011.

As a result of losing her brother, Tammy was keen to give back to the people that helped supported her and her brother through their battles with cancer. The aim of the TFF is to help others by alleviating some of the financial burden that comes with being diagnosed with cancer. Based on Tammy’s personal experience, the TFF provides financial assistance to cancer patients who have been diagnosed with breast and/or lung cancer and their families.

The Foundation’s success is based on the support of people, corporate donations, sponsorships and fundraising activities.

You can get involved by supporting the TFF Annual Golf Day fundraising event which will be held at Green Acres Golf Club in Kew on Friday 15 June 2018.

Tammy Foster Foundation would like to thank Nicola Wilkinson and Danny Ehmer for the event that was held in Winchelsea on 25/2/17. The community raised $17,000 for TFF.

Cancer battle inspires husband

Winchelsea’s Nicola Ehmer’s strength as she battled cancer has inspired her husband Danny to raise money for a cancer support charity.

Danny said seeing his wife go through cancer diagnoses and treatments for breast cancer and a malignant tumour was a scary time but Nicola’s strength and attitude were inspiring.

Doctors diagnosed Nicola with breast cancer last year and she received a second cancer diagnosis of a tumour in her neck, which she finished radiation treatment for last month.

Danny said that during Nicola’s treatment, which prevented Nicola, and sometimes Danny, from working for prolonged periods of time, the Tammy Foster Foundation contacted the family to offer financial support to help alleviate some of the financial costs of being diagnosed with cancer.

“It was quite daunting: for a woman who had just turned 40 years of age, the thing about breast cancer is it doesn’t discriminate,” Danny said of Nicola’s diagnosis.

“I can’t believe the strength she’s had, her attitude in fighting the cancer; she’s just been so positive the whole way through, the ‘it’s not going to beat me’ attitude.

“It’s been a roller coaster ride, a lot of ups and downs and hopefully now we’re coming out the other side of it.
“She’s getting better every day.”

Danny said that after experiencing the Tammy Foster Foundation’s generosity, he wanted to help other families living with cancer and the couple have partnered with the foundation to put on a fundraising event this Saturday evening at Winchelsea.

“I thought I’d like to give something back and help other families that are going through this,” he said.

Out of the Rough

Published in Out of the Rough, 7/9/2016

out-of-the-roughTammy Foster Foundation Golf Day The Northern Golf Club will host the annual Tammy Foster Golf Day on Friday the 16th of September with the proceeds being donated to people living with cancer. The Tammy Foster Foundation aims to alleviate some of the financial burden that comes with being diagnosed with cancer and over the past 3 years it has raised approximately $50,000. This money has been donated to 3 separate charities and different people struggling with the financial costs of suffering from cancer.

Northern’s very own Tammy Foster knows first hand the struggles of living with cancer and the financial costs that come with it after being diagnosed and beating the disease. Her and her late brother Jason’s battle with the disease inspired her  to create the Foundation and help those in need.

Tammy was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 just a month after her brother Jason was diagnosed with cancer. Her brother’s financial hardships in paying medical costs and subsequent passing inspired her to form the foundation and help those who couldn’t always help themselves. Tammy recounts that her brother Jason was forced to wait for 2 weeks for results after surgery and therapy and the health system failed those who couldn’t afford private health care. After losing Jason to the disease Tammy saw that “there was an area that needed help”, and sought to create the foundation and help people like her brother.

Currently the foundation donates up to $1500 dollars per person to the people diagnosed with cancer. They have helped up to five people in the last four-five months and aim to help up to ten more people in the next six months. The foundation gives cancer patients cash rather than pay directly for medical bills as according to Tammy “people suffering can chose to spend the money how they
wish”. This strategy is backed by the idea that those in advanced stages of cancer can help their loved ones or enjoy the time they have left with their family.

Tammy Foster represented Australia in international cricket and is one of  Northern’s most accomplished golfers and it is this drive to succeed and help those less fortunate than herself that has allowed the foundation to be the success that it is today.

You can donate to the Tammy Foster Foundation via the website at http://www.tff.net.au and bookings are still available for the golf day.

2015 Golf Day

On Tuesday March 24th, we held Tam Tam’s golf day. The day consisted of an Ambrose event, raffles, sausage sizzle and Merv Hughes was our special guest.

TLF_7087TFF Golf Day 2015 was held at Northern Golf Club.  We had over 90 players on the day and several sponsors to help us raise $13,500 to TFF.

The weather was not the best, but everyone enjoyed the events of the day.

There were some special mentions Merv Hughes was once again at his best and shared some stories from his Jungle experience, we also had Paul Williams enjoying a hit with our sponsors. The party hole once again was noisy and challenging to say the least with all the noise being made from Marita.

Our sponsors Globecast Australia, Samios Plumbing, Jet Couriers, Drummond Golf – Melbourne, The Heating & Cooling Company and Porterhaus Butchers for the BBQ meat that was on the party hole. Thank you all in supporting this great golf day.

Congratulation to all the winners and we hope to see you back in 2016.

In order to make this event a success, we need the support of sponsors.

If you would like to be a part of what is a great day in 2016, we will have several sponsorship packages available and hope that these will be of interest to you and your business.

As part of your sponsorship or donation, we will advertise your business to make people aware of your contribution to the golf day.

How Two Siblings’ Cancer Journey is Now Helping Others

Shane_Kelly_off_the_bike_-_Tammy_FosterLike all siblings, Tammy and Jason had their ups and downs but it wasn’t until Jason was diagnosed in January 2011 with cancer that the two really reconciled and in fact became the closest of friends.

A former Australian Women’s Cricket team member, Tammy recalls sitting one day with her brother and telling him how much she wished she could take his cancer away.

As it turned out, Tammy had had a cyst on her right breast for a bit, and decided she should probably go and have it checked. She was soon diagnosed with cancer in the left breast. She didn’t know if she should share the news with Jason or not.
